Everyone on these rivers was new once, and most of us learned by tagging along and pretending to understand the words. You don't have to pretend. Ten minutes here and the rest of the site will read like it was written for you — because it was.

What this site is

Riverbeta answers one question: is the river running, and what do I need to know before I go?It pulls the live flow off the government gauges every fifteen minutes, lays it against what local paddlers say each run is like, and gives you an honest read on the day. It is not a guidebook trying to sell you on a river — some days the site's whole job is to say not today.

The honest part, before anything else

Rivers here are cold, fast, and indifferent. The water is snowmelt — often in the 40s°F exactly when the rapids are biggest — and the hazard that kills the most paddlers isn't rapids at all: it's wood in the water, which is dangerous even on easy stretches. None of that means stay home. It means the difference between a great first season and a bad story is mostly choosing the right water, with the right people, on the right day — which is the entire point of this page.

How to read a run page

Every run page follows the same shape, top to bottom. Here's what each piece is actually telling you:

  • The status badge (GO / OK / NO).Today's flow measured against the run's best range. It describes the water, not you — a GO on Class III water is a green light only for paddlers who belong on Class III.
  • The class. How hard the whitewater is, on the I–VI scale. As a first-season rule: Class I–II is learning water, Class III is where you want experienced company, and Class III+ and up is not yet.
  • The flow chart. Today's CFS drawn against the run's prime range— the colored zones do the interpreting so the number doesn't have to mean anything to you yet.
  • “Is today the day?”The honest read — what this run, at this flow, asks of the people in the boat. If it says “confident intermediate” and you're not sure you are one, you have your answer.
  • Wood watch & hazards. Dated reports of strainers and wood, newest first. Check the dates — wood moves, and a three-week-old report is history, not beta.
  • The ⚑ flags.Amber flags mark claims no local has confirmed yet. They're the site being honest about what it doesn't know — read flagged beta with that grain of salt.
  • The checklist.Gear, tuned to today's water temperature. It assumes you already have the always-bring list from the safety page.

Any word that doesn't make sense lives in the plain-words glossary — run pages link into it wherever the vocabulary gets thick.

When to go guided

For your first time on moving water — and for your first time on any Class III run — going with a licensed outfitter is the move, not the fallback. A guide turns the river into a classroom: you'll watch how they read water, set safety, and talk about lines, and you'll come home with judgment instead of just a story. The same goes for taking kids on anything beyond float water, and for high-water days when the “Is today the day?” read says the river is pushy. Guides run these sections daily all summer; let them carry the risk while you collect the skills.

Where to start: the ladder, river by river

A good first season climbs in order: first float (learn what current feels like), first whitewater (real rapids with easy outs), stepping up(the run you earn). Here's that ladder on each river we cover — every rung links to its live run page.

Blackfoot River

The Blackfoot is built for learning — the corridor stacks its runs from tubing water to the river's biggest rapid, with road access the whole way.

  1. First float

    Missoula's summer float — easy Class I–II through the mellow lower canyon. Learn what moving water feels like under a boat before any of it pushes back.

  2. First whitewater

    The half-day sampler: Thibodeau and The Ledge inside six miles, on the busiest stretch of the river — real rapids with other boats around.

  3. Stepping up

    Continuous Class II that sharpens toward III at spring flows, finishing at Roundup Rapid — the biggest on the river. Run it when Whitaker feels easy.

Middle Fork Flathead

The Middle Fork goes from family scenic to the most popular whitewater day-run in the valley — same river, pick your rung.

  1. First float

    The family-friendly section — two hours of scenic gorge water with one real rapid (Devil's Elbow) to show you what a rapid is.

  2. First whitewater
    Paola to MoccasinClass II–III

    A long Class II day with a single Class III feature (Brown's Hole) — whitewater mileage without continuous consequence.

  3. Stepping up

    The classic — continuous read-and-run whitewater, the most popular hard day on any of the forks. Be solid on II–III water (and honest about the swim) first.

North Fork Flathead

The North Fork is mostly wilderness-corridor scenery — its ladder is short, and its top rung lives on the Middle Fork.

  1. First float

    Short, mellow, family-friendly — ninety minutes down to the Middle Fork confluence. The easiest water on this side of the valley.

  2. First whitewater

    The most popular North Fork run — canyon Class II–III with several real features. The Shelf near the end has a history; read the run page before you go.

  3. Stepping up
    Moccasin to West GlacierClass III+on the Middle Fork Flathead

    The North Fork tops out at II–III — when you want more, the next rung is the Middle Fork classic, twenty minutes up the highway.

The mainstem Flathead and the South Fork aren't on a ladder — the mainstem is all friendly float water (start anywhere), and the South Fork is a committing wilderness expedition that belongs at the far end of this progression, not the start.

One last thing

The honest answer to “am I ready for this run?” is a question: would you be okay swimmingit? Not planning to — but if it happened. If yes, go have the day. If not, pick the rung below it. The river will still be here when you're ready.
